Our story
BAMILEK is an independent concept store, based in Scotland, connecting the African Diaspora.
Our mission is to build on the legacy started by our ancestors, producing products for people like us. We care for our community a lot + understand the importance of nurturing it, which we do through social gatherings. Creating a safe space where you feel welcomed + encouraged to create without expectations. At BAMILEK it's all about being your bona fide self!
We create bespoke African pieces, such as bags, fans + jewellery. Offering high quality products akin to those you may find in the markets in African. With textiles amounting to roughly 7% of total waste in global landfill space, when creating our products our main goals are to minimise the amount of waste produced. Offering services like the upcycling + tailoring of garments, allows us to recycle scrapped materials whilst also helping you bring your ideas to life.
This is just the beginning of our story hopefully you stick around, for a while because, we have so much more to do...
a personal note from the founder
Growing up in a place where you just can't seem to find any representation of yourself, no matter how hard you look, is hard … I’m so grateful to my family for being my representation. Honestly without my mum shoving my culture down my throat, in the most loving way possible, I wouldn’t be where I am today so thanks mum <3
BAMILEK isn’t just another business venture to me, it’s a way to nurture my tribe’s legacy. As Bamiléké we are known to be entrepreneurs, artists + much more. Everyone has their own culture, but one way or another it’s being washed down losing the essence of what it was. This is why BAMILEK is so important to me, to be able to build on my legacy and continue to see it flourish.
Just because you weren’t born in your place of origin doesn’t mean you don’t have roots there to care about. So thank you very much for support me. A Cameroonian + Congolese girl, born in Scotland.
